BUDHA- MERCURY
OM BUM BUDHAYA NAMAHA (listen to the mantra by Sarah Yantra here)

The Young Sage- Quick, Articulate, and Adaptable
Mercury is the 4th of the Navagraha and governs our intellect. Mercury is the aspect of our human experience that opens us to curiosity about our world and our desire to learn and evolve by obtaining knowledge.
It is the power of our intellect to organize existence and provides the ability to discriminate in order to make clear decisions. The ultimate discrimination is that between truth and illusion - to discriminate between the desires of the ego and impulses from the soul.
Mercury allows us to formulate ideas and to communicate and share them with others. In Greek mythology, Merc is Hermes, the messenger of the Gods and the guide of our souls. Humans are a highly social and communicative species. Much of our technological advances are designed to improve our ability to communicate in order share knowledge and experiences, from writing on stone tablets to the invention of the smart phone. This accentuates Mercury’s powerful role in our collective consciousness.
Our relationship with the internet is a reflection of Mercury’s role in our lives. The internet is a quick way to share information via written communication widely. Messages are received nearly instantaneously and it is our use of discernment to determine what is fact and what is fiction in world inundated with information.
Mercury is quick, flexible, and adaptable- a chameleon. This is why we use the adjective “mercurial” to describe an individual with rapidly changing emotions or is ‘fickle.’ The alchemical element Quicksilver was renamed to Mercury on the Periodic Table as it has qualities of speed and sensitivity, just like this Graha.

The Sanskrit name for Mercury, Budha and Buddha share the same root, Budh. to wake up," "to know," or "to perceive”. It is the gift of Mercury to strip away the layers of illusory thoughts through the power of discernment to perceive and know the truth. The Buddha, the awakened one, is a powerful example of using Mercury’s influence for spiritual attainment. Buddhism uses negation as a meditative practice to dismantle false perceptions of reality. The essence is to end suffering and achieve lasting happiness (Nirvana) by understanding, taming, and transforming the mind.
Mercury rules Gyana (Jnana) Yoga—the path of intellect—and is especially beneficial for those whose dominant graha in their Ancient Ayurveda Blueprint is Mercury. These individuals are curious and inquisitive by nature. Their questioning is more important than the answers received. It is the questions that are spiritually invigorating.
Mercury engages in activity in short, quick bursts and this is the preference for meditation. For a Mercurial being, meditation is not sitting in quiet stillness with eyes closed, but in observation. Meditation becomes nearly a full time job by constantly observing relationships and processes to determine what is real vs unreal and what brings happiness vs suffering. There is no goal. No resting place. Simply clearly observing, alertly, the nature of life.
Mercury embodies a youthful, playful, sarcastic, and witty energy. The Peter Pan archetype reflects this spirit—chaotic, mischievous, and forever a child.
As Mercury governs communication and sharp intellect—essential qualities for effective negotiation and persuasion—it offers powerful support in business and marketing.

Mercury is the most dominant among my Navagraha, making Gyana (Jnana) Yoga a path naturally aligned with my spiritual evolution. The study of the stars and the Navagraha expresses Mercury’s applied intelligence in motion. At its highest level, the Ancient Ayurveda tradition and exploration of the Navagraha aim to reveal what is illusion and what is truth.
To me, life clearly unfolds as a kind of game—structured by its own rules, with each of us playing a role. Your blueprint simply reflects the skills and abilities you bring to that game. It is Mercury that fuels my passion to share this perspective and knowledge with you.

THE TEMPLE
Lord Swetharnyeswarar Swami Temple, Thiruvenkadu, Sirkali, Nagapattinam, Southern Tamilnadu.
This temple was built by the Chola Dynasty and the oldest part is over 3,000 years old. In fact, it is mentioned by the sage Valmiki in the Ramayana.

As is the tradition in the Navagraha temples, Shiva is the main deity here and there is a unique powerful connection to Shiva in this holy place. It is believed Shiva’s Rudra Tandava was performed here. The fierce, high-energy cosmic dance representing destruction, transformation, and the eradication of evil.
The temple's sacred tree, or Stala Vriksham, is the Vilvam (Bel tree): Known as Shivadruma (Tree of Shiva), it is believed to be a manifestation of Shiva himself. Offering its leaves is thought to bring immense blessings and destroy the sins of lifetimes.
Walking back toward the bus near the exit of the temple, I was intensely drawn to this tree. It is surrounded by ancient stone carvings of the Nagas, who represent protection, fertility, hidden wisdom, and the bridging of earthly and divine realms. In fact, many of these stones are two snakes intertwined resembling the Western caduceus of Mercury.

There was an unmistakable feeling of great reverence at this tree. It is adorned with orange strings which directly connects a devotee’s prayer with the divine. Prayer after prayer, wish upon wish, tied to this tree that was nothing less than a cosmic portal.
And there curled up at the base of the tree was a litter of young, black spotted, white, and brown puppies- an outward symbol of renewal and the youthful, playfulness of Mercury.

Stepping into the oldest part of the temple grounds, among the ancient stone pillars, was overwhelming. The vibration of thousands of years of worship and devotion was palpable to all the senses and up through the spine. Mercury’s blessings were felt with each step taken, bringing us closer to the murti (statue).
This temple was bright, open, and spacious and Mercury was adorned in green fabric and jewels. This was the only temple where I received a water blessing from the bath. As Mercury governs my spiritual nature, I felt compelled to stay as long as feasible. Our guide attempted to corral me back to the bus multiple times but when he turned away, I quickly walked back to Budha (Mercury) to gaze upon him, collect even more ash, and dip my new green bandha (protection string) in a bowl of sacred ash.

It was at this temple, more than any other, that I found myself alone simply in awe to be in Mercury’s vibration. And in the moments I was not alone, I was with only my Mother, Cathy, who is also a Gyani Yogi with Mercury ruling her spiritual path. It’s hard to put into words how meaningful it was to share the experience of this temple with her.
How Does Mercury Affect You?
The Ancient Ayurveda system describes The Eight Fields of Living: Physical Health, Vitality, Dharma, Creative Play, Career, Relationships, Desires, and—most importantly—Spirituality, or your Spiritual Path.
Each of us carries a unique cosmic blueprint. Within it, the Navagraha—the nine planetary forces—each govern a specific field of living, shaping the distinct expression of who you are.
Depending on which of the Eight Fields of Living Mercury governs in your personal blueprint, reveals how aspects of the intellect, communication, adaptability, and quickness naturally guide your life.
The Eight Fields of Living: Career
Each of us approaches our worldly work and livelihood in a unique way. This Field of Living is deeply intertwined with our life mission and the sense of fulfillment we experience in our occupations.
Depending on which of the nine grahas governs this aspect of your personal blueprint, you may feel drawn to specific types of careers that reflect the gifts you bring to the workplace. Understanding your unique blueprint—especially in relation to career and dharma—can deepen your sense of satisfaction and purpose in your work.
Mercury governs Kim’s career and she recently shared this:

Mercury (Budha) governs my career, shaping how I think, communicate, and contribute in my professional life. Known as “The Communicator” and “The Intellect,” Mercury embodies curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to translate complexity into clarity.
In my career these qualities show up every day. My work centers on connecting ideas, people, and systems—aligning cross-functional teams, interpreting user needs, and turning abstract concepts into actionable direction. Mercury’s influence is evident in my reliance on clear communication, quick thinking, and thoughtful observation to navigate challenges and drive progress.
Paired with a Warrior dharma, this expression of Mercury extends beyond communication, it becomes a tool for leadership, advocacy, and service. It reflects a responsibility to guide direction, protect the user experience, and create solutions that support others in meaningful ways.
Through this lens, Mercury is not just about intellect—it’s about using communication and insight in service of impact.
