SHANI- SATURN
OM SHAM SHANAYE NAMAHA
The Perfectionist- Disciplined, Methodical, and Cautious

Silence, Simplicity, Saturn.
Saturn is the seventh of the Navagraha and rules over the tangible dimensions of the human life. It governs the principle that consciousness must take physical form in order to be fully experienced and shapes it into something that is concrete and formed.
Saturn brings structure and sets limits to our experience in order for consciousness to be fully embodied.
From particles to atoms to molecules to complex matter, Saturn governs the physical world by imposing structure. Saturn is the cosmic architect, it is not the generator of consciousness but sets the boundaries of space by defining our physical limitations.
It provides clear boundaries and organizes our experience by governing our human constructs such as time, space, mortality, and responsibility. Saturn or Shani is also related to Kronos in Greek mythology and is associated with time, boundaries, and limitations and therefore governs the linear experience of birth, aging to adulthood, growing old, slowly dying and finally death.

Saturn is known as the Lord of Karma which sets the boundaries of causation by determining the exact reaction for every action.
It brings a seriousness that keeps us grounded in a reality with set limits and expectations. It is practical and down to earth as it is slow and steady and offering us an opportunity to develop patience. The concept that consistent, disciplined, hard work will eventually pay off is deeply Saturine.
It represents triumph over adversity through perseverance, obedience, and orderliness.
If Saturn feels melancholic, dry, or rigid to you, you’re not alone. Yet these qualities are an essential part of the human experience. In many systems, Saturn is considered a malefic planet- a superstitious concept that a planet is responsible for making bad things happen in your life. This is wholly untrue and a crude misinterpretation and misunderstanding of the essence of the Navagraha.
In this Ancient Ayurveda system, the Navagraha are reflections of our human experience, they are not outside forces that have an uncontrollable effect on you. Saturn earned this superstition because it sets limits and is responsible for our attachments to our physical experience. To Saturn, death and dying are spirituality enlivening.

Grief is the profound emotion that arises from the loss of something deeply cherished in our physical experience. It is often private and sorrowful, something most people hope to avoid, yet it is an inevitable part of being human.
There is transformative potential in the experience of grief when we come to recognize that consciousness is neither created nor destroyed but is eternal, and that what is no longer present in our physical reality is not truly lost.
Time heals all wounds and Saturn is the master of time.
It is the shyest, most reclusive and private of the Navagraha and represents absolute silence and simplicity.
Saturn uses cold, dry logic as a means to finding the truth such as scientific reasoning and evidence. As such, it governs the inorganic sciences (physics, chemistry), medicine and all forms of healthcare, and technical disciplines such as construction, engineering, and computer sciences.
Hatha Yoga, the path of physical purification to support the cultivation of deep inner silence is Saturine. Inner silence arises as the “monkey mind”—the restless, distracted stream of constantly shifting thoughts—begins to settle and grow quiet, allowing the deeper self, or soul, to speak more clearly and guide our awareness.
Hatha Yoga is the form most Westerners picture when they hear “yoga”—often seen as a mat-based practice involving minimal clothing and the body moving through various postures and stretches. But the true practice of Hatha Yoga is so much more and actually has nothing to do with group exercise in a hot room with loud music, in spandex clothing. Sorry Lululemon.
Hatha Yoga is an austere, disciplined and structured approach that uses the physical body or physicality as a way to reach a spiritual state. Yes, asana, the yoga postures, are one way but breath work is also Hatha Yoga. Tai Chi is Hatha Yoga. Running is Hatha Yoga. Study of the body, health, and longevity is Hatha Yoga. Fasting from food, sex, the senses, and sleep is Hatha Yoga.
Using the body to transcend the body is Hatha Yoga.
Hatha Yoga is the most ideal spiritual path for those whose most dominant graha is Saturn in their Ancient Ayurveda blueprint.
These individuals are naturally skeptical, trusting concrete evidence and cold, dry logic over speculative ideas. They are grounded in the boundaries of reality, not wasting time with lofty ideals or vague, dreamy fantasies. They are practical and down to earth.
They tend to approach spirituality with thoughtful caution and are drawn to teachings grounded in a scientific framework. For them, the path to the divine is often more impersonal, finding resonance in the principles of quantum physics rather than in personal prayers of devotion.

Hatha yogis value silence, simplicity, and solitude, yet rarely feel lonely. This tendency deepens with age, reflecting the slow, maturing influence of Saturn. When we picture a yogi retreating to a cave to meditate alone, we’re describing a style that aligns most closely with this path—one that is austere, quiet, solitary, and centered on stillness. Simply sitting and observing your breath is a Hatha Yoga meditation.
Saturn governs my career and has guided me toward my work as an occupational therapist, with a focus on neurology and pain management, integrating Ayurveda and Hatha Yoga practices such as pranayama (breathwork) and movement as therapeutic modalities. Saturn directly inspired me to name my practice, Inner Silence.
The dangers of Saturn are becoming mentally rigid or preoccupied with one’s own body.
SATURN KEYWORDS: Organization, Structure, Boundaries, Physical, Limitation, Silence, Solitude, Simplicity.
MESSAGE FROM SATURN: Draw into the silence to make a decision or persevere in a task already begun. Be simple and focused, avoiding distractions and detours.

THE TEMPLE
Tirunallar Dharbaranyeswarar Temple in Karaikal, Puducherry. It was built and expanded mainly during the Chola period (around 9th century CE) but likely much older, possibly part of pre-Chola Shaiva worship traditions in the region.
Legend says that a king named Nala suffered under Saturn’s influence and found relief here through Shiva’s grace, which is why the temple is strongly associated with karmic relief and transformation.
Devotees visit this temple on Saturdays to propitiate Saturn to ease prolonged difficulties and restore balance during challenging life phases.
We set out to visit the temple on a rainy Saturn’s Day (Saturday), which seemed to deepen the melancholic tone associated with this graha. The journey was long and slow, with minor challenges along the way. Although we had expected it to be the longest of the nine temple visits, it ultimately proved more arduous and tiring than anticipated, taking nearly twice as long as we had planned. The long, slow journey was reflective of Saturn’s energy, and it was no surprise that this was our experience. In many ways, our encounter with Saturn seemed to begin the moment we stepped onto the bus.
The challenges did not end on the bus.
The temple grounds were wet and muddy. Shoes are removed upon entering the temple and I still clearly remember the sensation of stepping into a deep mud puddle and immediately worried about feces and bacteria in the water (ah, Saturn so closely related to fear).

As Saturn/Shani is considered a malefic energy, it was busy - very busy! It is estimated that on many Saturdays, over 50,000 people visit this temple. The queue to visit Shani was tightly packed, shoulder to shoulder with barely any space to move, and the ground beneath us was slick and treacherous from the oil that is offered to Saturn/Shani (as Saturn is associated with the quality of dryness, oil is offered to remediate). I found myself pushing back to protect the smaller children in our group.
In the midst of the overwhelming, chaotic environment, it was easy to lose focus, but I kept repeating the Saturn/Shani mantra again and again, staying mindful of the yantra in my hand and of my husband—whom I held in my heart as he is a Hatha Yogi—to keep myself grounded.
It felt as if we were walking through a dark cave illuminated only by ghee lights and as we approached Saturn, the line came to a stop - no movement forward. Just standing in one place, all the while being pushed forward in the crowd. Finally, the priests opened the curtain covering the Saturn Murti and the crowd cheered and moved forward toward the shrine.
I have no distinct memory of standing directly in front of Saturn, it was overpowering but I know I handed the offering for my husband to the priest, said his name “Kevin” and received the aarthi flame and sacred ash and was quickly ushered away.

After our darshan, my mother, Cathy, and I offered black sesame seeds to the fire to honor Shani/Saturn for assistance with challenges and hardships.
The visit created a profound sense of silence and stillness as upon returning, I completed my Saturn/Shani yantra alone in my room.
How Does Saturn Affect You?
The Ancient Ayurveda system describes The Eight Fields of Living: Physical Health, Vitality, Dharma, Creative Play, Career, Relationships, Desires, and—most importantly—Spirituality, or your Spiritual Path.
Each of us carries a unique cosmic blueprint. Within it, the Navagraha—the nine planetary forces—each govern a specific field of living, shaping the distinct expression of who you are.
Depending on which of the Eight Fields of Living Saturn governs in your personal blueprint, reveals how aspects of silence, simplicity, solitude, and physicality naturally guide your life.
The Eight Fields of Living: Relationships
This Field of Living defines how we interact with others-- how we relate to our friends,
family, associates and acquaintances. It is our style of relating.
As we are social beings, so much of our happiness is dependent upon our relationships and interactions with others. When others around us are happy, we reflect that happiness and when others are negative, angry, and generally unhappy, we too, reflect that negativity.
We have the ability to project love and happiness into the world through our interactions with those around us. Poorly functioning relationships drag us down both physically and mentally, whereas good relationships are catalysts for renewed vitality, bringing a sense
of peace and harmony to our existence.
Good friends should be cherished above all else.
By understanding your particular relating style, you gain greater insight into how you
project your energy into the world. Your style of relating is also colored, of course, by
your innate Spiritual Nature
Saturn governs Jenna’s relationships and she recently shared this…

There is a game that I like to play in the quiet of my house where I sit and try to listen to the silence. Most people would find that odd, considering there is no sound to hear, but somehow I can hear beyond what my ears recognize. There is a great song that exists in that silence.
The comfort that game brings me is the same energy that governs my relationships.
Where most people remember the birthdays (send the cards, set a reminder text, call on the hour of the person’s birth to catch up.) I simply have moments where peoples births are brought to my awareness and I send them love -across time and space without any noise.
I love my friends from afar. I love in a way that isn’t always in view.
Over the years I labeled myself as a “a flake”, or someone who doesn’t show up for others.
Through the Ancient Ayurveda knowledge, I have come to understand that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Love, as we know, is not identified by Time and Space and Friendship is not limited to a physical presence.
I have found friends that are willing to sit in that silence long enough….and those connections are beyond words.
